New focus and pricing

Happy new year!

We’re kicking off the new year with an announcement:

This year we’ll be narrowing our focus to serve newsrooms and media companies.

We’ve also updated our pricing to reflect this new focus.

Here’s the backstory

In the past, we’ve catered to newsletter publishers of all sizes: From solo creators and hobbyists to large newsrooms with millions of subscribers.

This made it very difficult to make product decisions like “should we add SMTP options like Mailgun to make newsletters as cheap as possible for solo creators or should we add Hubspot/Pardot integrations for large companies?”

This is just one example from the dozens of difficult product decisions we’ve had to make.

This problem of serving too many customers types also bleeds into sales, onboarding, marketing, and business.

For example, do we build more self-serve documentation and videos for indie newsletter writers? Or do we build systems that enable higher touch services for larger companies who need Zoom calls to discuss their complex publishing set up.

Continuing to serve all types of customers would’ve resulted in an average plugin, support and services for everyone.

By focusing on newsrooms and media companies, we can now aim for excellence. We’re able to confidently make product decisions that result in a much better plugin for this specific group of users. And structure our business to really help these users with their newsletter operations.

New pricing

Now that we serve newsrooms and media companies, we’ve also updated our pricing to a simple $120/month, billed annually.

This new pricing is very similar to our previous Newsroom tier, which most of our newsroom and media customers were on anyway.

It also allows us to simply offer the entire plugin to all customers. No more having to scrutinise each plan to figure out which was best for you.

We’re also able to offer onboarding and training calls to all our customers, which enables us to learn about the nitty gritty details of each customer’s specific set up and provide recommendations and best practices based on each company’s needs.

Our new enterprise and agencies tier allows us to offer pricing packages customised to each company.

Finally, we’ve removed the Writer and Publisher tiers altogether.

As we settle into this new direction, our pricing packages might change slightly as we learn more about our customers needs and how to package our offerings to serve them best. But there will not be any more significant pricing changes for the foreseeable future.

What happens to existing customers?

There are no changes for existing customers. Your pricing and subscription will remain the same. Your plugin will continue to work. You’ll continue to get all our latest feature updates and support.

If you have any concerns about this, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

Final thoughts and further questions

This change took many months of deliberation and work. It was not an easy decision to make. But I’m really looking forward to deepening relationships with newsrooms, media companies and agencies who serve these customers.

If you have any other questions, just reply to this email and ask them. I’ll do my best to answer.

That’s it for this product update. Thanks for reading.

Best,

Lesley
